The Church of the Holy Family founded in 1857 by Jesuit missioner, Fr. Arnold Damen, SJ was the first Jesuit Church in Chicago. It is one of the five structures to survive the Chicago fire in 1871 and is the City’s only example of Pre- Civil war Victorian Architecture. It also houses the oldest stained glass windows in Chicago - made in 1860 by W.H. Carse Co. The Church is an embodiment of the cultural and ethnic diversity of Chicago - even though the original congregation was dominated mainly by Irish immigrants, the church welcomed masses of immigrants to the city earning the name Ellis Island of the Midwest.
