The Firka Fortress was built by the Venetians in the port area of Crete to protect the entrance from invaders. The fort was also the headquarters for the commander-in-chief of the army. Today, it houses the Maritime Museum of Crete. It is located close to the waterfront.
You will find a courtyard, a dome-shaped water tank and arched openings used as prison cells or to hide cannons in the fortress. Constructed by the Venetians in the 17th century, Firka served as a defensive bastion against maritime threats. Its strategic location on the waterfront offered protection to the city and its inhabitants.
