Vegueta Old Town, Canary Islands Overview

Vegueta Old town is packed with good old golden day vibes with its cobbled streets, beautiful corners, and architecture (Greek and Renaissance among others) that places you back to golden times. Vegueta is packed with cobbled plazas, tropical vegetation and gorgeous fountains.

Plaza de San Antonio Abad and its chapel form one of the oldest pockets of Vegueta. The chapel was the first in the city and the place where Christopher Columbus offered his prayers before embarking on this journey that would lead him to America. The entire town is a site to marvel at and the best place to get lost in time. Some of the highlights here are the Casa de Colon mansion, the Museo Canario museum, Santa Ana cathedral, Casas Consistoriales, Gabinete Literario club, etc.

This is where Captain Juan Rejon arrived in 1478 and built the first settlement in his conquest of the Canary Islands. His troops set up the first camp in the Barranco del Guiniguada using three massive palm trees to signal the boats and soon it became known as the Real de Las Palmas. This is where the city of Las Palmas de Grand Canaria was born in the late 15th century.

2. On Thursday evenings sample the best morsels at tapas crawl, Calle Mendizabal, which for the islanders has become a tradition. 
3. Mercado de Vegueta is one of the oldest markets in the town and offers a large variety of tropical fruits and garden-fresh vegetables. 
4. The best way around the town is to simply walk, which allows you to leisurely soak in the wonderful architecture it offers and also digest the delicious food you may never feel like stopping to bite into
