Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, Brisbane Overview
Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park sits on the Brisbane River directly opposite the CBD, built around a heritage-listed former quarry face cut into 230-million-year-old rhyolite rock. The cliffs are floodlit at night and used year-round for rock climbing and abseiling, with several companies running guided sessions on site. Free public access, riverside paths, picnic areas and open lawns make it a popular after-work and weekend spot for locals, who come mainly for the uninterrupted skyline views across the river to the city towers.
Once a working quarry supplying stone for early Brisbane, the cliffs were progressively redeveloped into public parkland, most recently extended in January 2010. The 1.8-mile face of Brisbane tuff rises directly from the river's edge and is heritage-listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Floodlighting keeps the climbing and abseiling walls in use after dark, and former naval storage buildings at the base now house an adventure operator running river and rock-climbing activities. Captain Burke Park at the northern end adds barbecues, playgrounds and a ferry wharf. The clifftop path is a favourite for photos of the Brisbane CBD skyline and Story Bridge at sunset.
