Kahlur Fort, Bilaspur Overview

Kahlur Fort or Kot-Kahlur is a majestic structure built about 3600 feet above sea level in the district of Bilaspur. Bilaspur was initially was known as Kahlur, a princely state during the British era. The ruins of the fort are a well-known attraction on the Naina Devi Dhar/Hill a little distance away from the Ganguwal Hydroelectric plant. The fort served as a palace as well for the King of Bilaspur, Raja Bir Chand who ruled between 697 and 730 CE. Due to its proximity to Bilaspur, it is often visited by picnickers. History lovers and architecture freaks are sure to find the fort breathtaking. 

Kahlur Fort is an ancient structure entirely made of stone. A little imagination can make a simple tour through the ruins of the fort a memorable experience. The enormous entrance, the pathways, the corridors and the stone staircases of the two-storey ancient structure are just captivating. The view from the top of the fort is just mind-stirring. Architecture of Kahlur Fort

Kahlur Fort is wholly made of stone and is 30 metres wide and 30 metres tall. The walls of the fort are about two metres thick, and the structure has two levels - each level is about 15 metres tall. The first storey has numerous pillars that support the ceiling. The second floor has several small windows at a height of about 12 meters that were used by garrisons to keep a watch or defend if required. These windows have now been secured for security reasons either with an iron mesh or entirely shut with cement. The fort also has a little temple dedicated to Goddess Naina/ Naina Devi. The idol of the goddess is also carved in stone and can be seen by tourists even today.

Best Time To Visit Kahlur Fort

The best time to visit the fort is between June and September when the region receives rainfall, and the hill is covered with lush greenery making the trip extremely pleasant.

The best way to reach Kahlur Fort is by rented taxis or private vehicles. Tourists need to take NH2015 to reach the fort which is located about 55 kilometres away from Bilaspur.
