The first inhabitants were the people who came from what is now called Cuba. Later came the Lucayans, who because of their peaceful nature were enslaved after Christopher Columbus discovered the island of San Salvador in 1492. The English Puritians arrived here in 1649 looking for religious freedom, but found food shortages. They received supplies from the American colonies, in exchange for brasileto wood. During the 1600, the pirates and privateers came here for hiding treasure in its shallow waters. Some people believe that the islands still hold hidden treasure. Nassau was established as a commercial port in 1670, but wasnt administered by the right people. Hence in 1718, a Royal Governor was assigned who restored law and order. Later, American colonists, loyal to Eluthera came and forced the Spanish forces to retreat.
