Auroville Beach, Auroville Overview

Auroville Beach, also known as the Auro Beach is located in Pondicherry. It is a part of the Auroville Ashram and is situated about 10 kilometres away. The beach is about 12 kilometres away from Pondicherry and lies on the right-hand side of East Coast Road.

Auro Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Pondicherry. It attracts a lot of tourists and locals. The beach stays true to its form and doesn't have a lot of establishments that provide food or snacks. The Ashram has maintained its serenity and ensured that it is not tampered or changed a lot due to human encroachment.

Why is the Beach Popular?

This is a public beach and closes at around 6:30 in the evening. The tides on the beach are generally low thereby making it a good place to swim. The beach has a lot of resorts and hotels on its shores, and you can enjoy the beach to its fullest by staying at one of these places. The accommodations available here range between Guesthouses, Auroville's accommodation, Resorts and Hotels.

The famous lighthouses of Auroville can be viewed from the beach. The beach has a small fisherman colony on its shores. This colony makes a living off the beach and the resources it has to offer. The best time to visit the beach is during the sunrise and the evening, just before the beach closes. The sun at these times is delightful and perfect for photographs too.

The damage caused by the tsunami that hit the Pondicherry city in 2004 can still be seen at the beach. You can see the ruins of the damaged beach shacks and stalls that still lies untouched at the beach. There aren't many street vendors and beach shacks at the beach. Hence, it is a perfect place to spend some time in absolute peace.

Auroville

The beach got its name from the famous Auroville township that is located very close to the beach. The Auroville township is an experimental township which promotes the idea of a living beyond the limitations of the caste, creed, religion, colour and economic and social status. The idea of Auroville was proposed by the Mirra Alfassa was known as ‘The Mother’ in the year 1968. It isn’t a tourist place but a centre of solace where the visitors can practice meditation and lead a life on the basis of the Auroville preachings. There is the main complex inside the Auroville township, known as Matrimandir. Although the entry inside the Matrimandir is reserved.

Tips For Visiting Auroville Beach

1. There are very few beach shacks at the beach. It is advisable to carry your own food and water bottles.

2. Take a bus instead of an auto rickshaw for a cheaper ride to the beach.

The Auroville beach is situated 12 km away from Pondicherry. You can take a public transport such as autorickshaw or bus to reach the Auroville beach.
