Gunung Keriang, Alor Setar Overview

Gunung Keriang, popularly also known as Mount Keriang is an age old mountain range stretched along a paddy field to the northwest of Alor Setar in the Kedah district of Malaysia. At an elevation of 218 meters, the 250 million year old mountain of Gunung Keriang is shaped like an elephant and is majorly composed of limestone. Gunung Keriang has some distinctive features like the presence of ten different rocks renowned for Fung-Shui at a single place like calcite crystals among others. The place is yet very famous among tourists and is expanding slowly with some inclusions like Water Park, horse riding fields, mini zoo and even a lift to reach the peak easily.

An exciting place to explore, Gunung Keriang equips various sized caves, the larger one being Gua Keriang. The terrain is small yet beautiful and perfect for an easy trekking to capture some interesting photographs of the paddy fields. Unlike other terrains, visitors can enjoy on Gunung Keriang in multiple ways. Visit the Gunung Keriang recreational park and appreciate the walking trails, concrete railings, exquisite flora and fauna, modern designed gazebos for a memorable experience. Gunung Keriang Recreational Park

Gunung Keriang recreational park is a pretty landscaped area in the lap of Gunung Keriang which is way popular among locals and tourists. Glorified with exotic flora and lush green area, it defines nature in a mesmerizing manner. A small lake and a bridge in the recreational park is one stop for capturing some amazing pictures and relaxing amidst the voice of chirping birds. This recreational park is filled with adventurous activities around, like rock climbing, trekking and even camping. Hiking at Gunung Keriang

Short yet steep hike at Gunung Keriang is much fun covering a distance of 8 kilometres. There is free parking available at Taman Rekreasi Gunung Keriang which is 5 minutes’ away from the hike entrance. The first uphill train is steep and stony covering a 300 metre distance and well planned with hand railing, ropes and red directional arrows for a convenient hiking. After the first trail comes to a downhill terrain, which eventually flattens for an easier experience, spot the massive yellow and green rice fields from this point. Climb through the narrow staircase and pass from three checkpoints, CP1, CP2 and CP3 which are easily spotted and point out to the peak trail and the way to Gua Keriang. The most exciting cave lies in this route, Lion's cave, which is a circular mouthed cave with a stone shaped like a lion on the entrance of it. After another 15 minutes’ walk from CP3, take some rest and enjoy the scenic view of Kedah, rice fields, and straits of Melaka from the gazebos located around. The peak is 12 minutes’ away from gazebos and is comparatively easy to climb. The entire hiking tour is 1 hour 20 minutes and is easy but adventurous.

How to reach Gunung Keriang?

-          By train: - Board a train KTM ETS from KL Sentral station of Kuala Lumpur for KTM Anak Bukit train station. Gunung Keriang is 8 kilometres away from KTM Anak Bukit and can be reached by a private taxi in a time span of 12 minutes.

-          By road: - Take a private taxi or drive towards Gunung Keriang via Jalan Gunung Keriang from Alor Setah for a 15 minutes route. From Kuala Perlis, it takes around 45 minutes to reach Gunung Keriang via route 1.
