Exploring the area on a bike is a great way to soak in the beauty of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding land. With bike-friendly lanes, exploring the area is a safe and cheap option. All you need is a driver’s license to rent a bike in Mykonos and an international driver’s license if the former is from outside the EU zone.

Requirements for Renting a Bike in Mykonos

Minimum Age: The minimum age limit in Mykonos is 18 years. But the limit may vary depending on the type of bike you are looking for. For a 50cc bike rental, 18 years is the age criteria, while it is 21 years for 125cc and 170cc ATVs.

Driver’s license:
You need to hold a driver’s license valid for at least a year from your country of residence when renting a bike in Mykonos.  If the license is not issued in the EU, you might also require an international driver’s license (IDP).
While many rental companies rent bikes to people with a driver’s license and no IDP, it is better to hold both because you might get fined if the police stop you.
The validity period requirements vary from bike to bike. The driver must have a valid license for at least a year for a 50cc, 125cc bike and 170cc ATV bike, whereas for a buggy or 450cc bike, the validity has to be for three years.

Payment methods:
Credit and debit cards are the primary methods of payment at most rental companies. All major credit cards are accepted, including Visa, Mastercard and Maestro. Diners and AMEX might not work at many rental companies, so check in advance to avoid last-minute hassles. Some companies accept cash as well.

Deposit:
Some rental companies take a 10% advanced deposit of the total amount to secure your booking. Passport or credit card details are also often held as deposits.

Rental period:
The minimum rental period is 24 hours, and every hour post is calculated at 1/5th of the daily rate.

Getting an insurance policy is the best way to have peace of mind while roaming the streets of Mykonos. It is not only mandated by law to have third-party insurance but also protects you against financial liabilities in case of accidents or damage. Get a two-wheeler insurance policy. Most companies include this insurance in their packages. Make sure to cross-check the Insured Declared Value (IDV) while booking your bike.

Things to Keep in Mind for Bike Rental in Mykonos

Source
  • Testing the bicycle condition: While most reputed rental companies maintain good quality bikes, it is highly advised to check the vehicle conditions yourself while picking it up from the head office. Check the physical condition of the bike and inform the company in case of any slightest scratch or dent. Go as far as to ask for a test drive before renting a particular model, if possible. Check if the brakes, clutch, gear pedal, horn and headlights are working properly. Make sure that the engine is working properly and there are no strange noises coming while driving. If anything seems amiss, let the company know beforehand.
  • Noting the dealer details: Tourists often get scammed when they are traveling to a different country. To avoid any troublesome misadventure, be prepared on all fronts and note all the information about the dealer including their name, company’s office address, phone numbers, etc.
  • Recording the condition of the bicycle: Make sure to record the original condition of the bike the minute you pick it up from the company’s office. Keeping a picture or video documentation of the bike conditions ensures that you have proof to show your innocence in case of any damages to the vehicle.
  • Returning on time: Many rental companies might charge you extra if you return the bike past the decided time, hence it is always better to plan your itinerary in a way that gives you ample time to return your vehicle on time. But things don’t always go according to our plans, so in case any delays make sure to immediately inform the company to avoid any bitter confrontations. Most rentals would be willing to accommodate the exceeded time with given terms and conditions.
It is a completely different world to experience a new place by renting a bike or a car. Mykonos has many bike rental companies that provide high quality vehicles to tourists. Book your bike and take to the streets for a hands-on island experience!
