Begin sightseeing with the capital city of Hanoi, where top tourist spots include Perfume Pagoda, Dong Xuan Market, Thang Long’s Imperial Citadel, Hoan Kiem Lake, Vietnam Ethnology Museum, Hoa Lo Prison and Old Quarter. Then, ride speedboats at Halong Bay and Bai Tulong Bay, hike through Cat Ba Island’s Cang Viet Hai Trail, Ngu Lam Peak for breathtaking bay views, and meet interesting locals at Sapa.

Large metropolises like Ho Chi Minh City are doused in art and culture, loved for their mouth-watering Pho made with beef, rice noodles and stock, colourful markets and nightlife. War Remnants Museum, Bui Vien Street, Cu Chi Tunnels, Jade Emperor Pagoda are some must-visit destinations here. Shopaholics can buy Ao Dai Vietnamese costumes, lacquerware, Guoc Mocs and bamboo products at Ben Thanh Market.

For a languid change, hitch a cargo boat ride through Mekong’s stilted villages and Mang Thit River surrounded by rice paddies. Quang Binh province is home to a UNESCO-listed wonder called Hang Son Doong, riddled with hundreds of deep caves, waterfalls and trekking trails. Tây Ninh is another busy town of great religious importance, home to Cao Dai Temple and parochial churches.

Vietnam is equally big on adventure sports. So prepare for an adrenaline rush with wildlife safaris at Bach Ma National Park, trekking along forested mountains, thundering Alpine Coaster rides at Da Nang and splurge on your love for nature at 1,600 spectacular Limestone Mountains rising from the sea at Ninh Binh.
