Having travelled around Africa before, our expectations for this trip were already high. Westway Safaris Limited exceeded them.
Our journey through Tanzania and Zanzibar was exceptionally well organi (Read More)sed, but what made it special was how personalised everything felt. The hotels and camps were excellent, the views spectacular and every stop gave us a different experience. As vegetarians, we were particularly impressed that suitable meals were thoughtfully arranged throughout the trip rather than being treated as an afterthought.
A huge amount of credit goes to Christian, who planned and managed our journey. His greatest strength is his resourcefulness. Whatever we asked for, he seemed determined to find a way to make it happen. Only a few days before travelling, we requested an open safari vehicle during an extremely busy period, and somehow he secured one.
His commitment became even clearer when our luggage was lost. Christian personally handled communication with the airline, waited at the airport and helped us deal with the disruption. With our safari due to begin and our clothing stuck inside the missing suitcase, he even arranged for shops to remain open late so we could buy what we needed. That level of involvement is rare.
Our main guide, Richard, was equally outstanding. Over eight days, his knowledge, confidence and personality transformed the safari. He organised private picnics, helped us find the wildlife we most wanted to see and never made us feel rushed. When one member of our family hoped to see a leopard, Richard went considerably out of his way to make it happen, resulting in one of our most memorable sightings.
He also became our unofficial photographer and even helped us negotiate fairly when buying souvenirs. By the end of the trip, he no longer felt like someone simply assigned to guide us. We had formed a genuine friendship, to the point that I began calling him “kaka,” meaning brother in Swahili.
We also have to give a special mention to Musa, who guided us for around three days and was another brilliant example of the quality of people Westway works with. His knowledge was extensive, his English was excellent and he had a very calm, thoughtful personality.
What made Musa particularly memorable was seeing him gradually open up during the time we spent together. He initially seemed quite reserved, but by the end he told us that he was usually quite a reclusive person and that he had enjoyed our company so much that he found himself opening up far more than he normally would. That was a lovely moment for us because the feeling was completely mutual — we genuinely enjoyed having him with us too.
What stood out about Christian, Richard and Musa was that none of them felt like people simply doing a job. They were knowledgeable and professional, but also warm, personable and genuinely invested in whether we were enjoying ourselves.
That reflects extremely well on Westway Safaris as a whole. This is a team that deserves to grow, and we would happily trust them to organise another African adventure for us in the future.
An exceptional trip, made exceptional by exceptional people.
