Saptarishi Kund, Yamunotri Overview

Saptrishi Kund is a high altitude lake, located at 4421 metres. Believed to be the original source of the Yamuna River, it is a trekking spot near Yamunotri. Saptrishi Kund trek is one of the most difficult treks in Uttarakhand. While there are no paved paths or camping sites, the trail remains covered with ice for the most part. The 16 km trek starts from Jankichatti and goes through Yamunotri Temple.

Saptrishi Kund is fed by the Champasar glacier which is located in the upper regions of the Champasar mountainous region. The kund is sacred and revered as the seven sages (Rishi Kashyap, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vasisthaand Jamadagni, Gautama, Viswamitra) are believed to have performed penance here.

Tips :

  • Best time for the trek is May, June, September and October. Avoid monsoon
  • The trek should be done only by experienced trekkers with a guide
