Vieng Xai Cave History & Significance

Vieng Xai was the headquarters of Pathet Lao, the former communist organization in Laos. The region is surrounded by limestone mountains and cliffs, which are home to many natural caves. These caves sheltered the officers of Pathet Lao during the second Indochina war. They established a hidden city in these caves housing more than 20000 people.

For nine years between 1964 and 1973 people lived in darkness, mostly due to the massive bombing. The caves had military barracks, theatre, a radio station, schools, hospitals, government offices and markets. In 1973, Vieng Xai became the capital of Laos and remained so until 1975, when the capital was shifted to Vientiane.
