Uppuveli is the quieter of Trincomalee's two beach suburbs, with Nilaveli a bit further up the coast being the busier, more built-up one. Its long stretch of sand and calm, shallow water make it a good swimming beach, and it draws travelers looking for a slower pace than the south coast towns get. Nilaveli, just up the coast, is the jump-off point for boat trips to Pigeon Island National Park, a small marine reserve known for reef sharks, turtles and snorkeling, and it's an easy day trip from Uppuveli. Whale-watching boats also run seasonally out of Trincomalee. Uppuveli itself is about 6 km from Trincomalee town, home to the historic Koneswaram Temple, so exploring the town is a simple add-on to a beach stay here.

The Koneshwaram temple or the Temple of the Thousand Pillars is a classical-medieval Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that this temple was built in 400 BC and it has devotees swarming in from different parts of the world. Fort Fredrick stands contrasting to the synagogue on the peninsula. The fortress which is now used by the Sri Lankan military was erected by the Portuguese and developed by the Dutch. On the same grounds, stands the Wellesley house, a real example of yesteryear architecture that once hosted the Duke of Wellington.
