Kyllang Rock, Shillong Overview

Some 78 km away from Shillong, a unique giant rock made out of red granite, Kyllang Rock is a giant dome placed in the West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The Rock which is 5400 ft above sea level and has a width of around 1000 ft is a mammoth block of granite which is part of the Khasi folklore and seems beautiful in its shape. A hike to the top of Kyllang Rock allows you to treasure the marvellous landscape of the surrounding area.

Surrounded by age-old Red Rhododendrons, Kyllang Rock is said to have a special magnetic field that makes sure that people don't fall off it. The mammoth dome is inaccessible from its southern side whereas the northern side is full of rhododendrons and bushes. Rock climbing lovers flock to Kyllang Rock to test their skills and enjoy some unhindered adventure. Trekking to the top of the rock takes around 30 minutes but the view from the top is worth it. You can also climb to the top by the staircase at the site.

Best Time to Visit Kyllang Rock

Kyllang rock is a year round destination barring the months of June till August due to the monsoons which make traveling in this part of the country a hassle. The bushy rhododendrons provide a perfect backdrop for this giant dome during the winter months proving to be a beautiful sight to behold. Meghalaya does get very cold, hence if your travelling in the winter months, stock up on woollens adequately.

1. Wear shoes with a good grip as slippers and slippery soles can be a hassle while climbing the rock.
2. You might need the help of a local guide to trek to the top of the rock.

How to reach Kyllang Rock

Air: Nearest airport is at Umroi which is 35 km from Shillong and is connected to Guwahati and other North-eastern cities. Guwahati is the nearest international airport well connected to major cities of the country located some 100 km from Shillong. One can hire a cab or catch bus from Umroi or Guwahati for Shillong.
Rail: Nearest rail head is at Guwahati from where one can either hire a cab or catch public or private buses direct till Shillong from where one can get a cab or bus till Nongstoin.
Road: Shillong is just 78 km from Nongstoin or Kyllang Rock on the NH 44E and can be reached through a hired a cab or by catch a bus from Shillong till Mairang and further till Nongstoin from Mairang.
