Sagarmatha National Park covers the Everest region in Nepal's Solukhumbu district and is the route most trekkers take to reach Everest Base Camp. It was established in 1976 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, notable for being a protected area built around an inhabited Sherpa homeland rather than an empty wilderness. Namche Bazaar, the region's main town and usual acclimatisation stop, sits inside the park, along with several other well-known peaks besides Everest itself, including Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. Most visitors fly into Lukla and trek in from there, since there's no road access to the park.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site has other important peaks apart from Mount Everest like Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Pumori, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kwangde, Kangtaiga and Gyachyung Kang. It is also a preservation site for rare species of animals and birds, like the red panda and snow leopard. The wildlife sanctuary stretches over 1100 square kilometres and is recognized as an eminent bird sanctuary by BirdLife International, making it a highly important tourist attraction for people who enjoy mountaineering and bird watching.

Everest Base Camp: One of the most popular routes to trek along is the Everest Base Camp where tourists can visit the various landmarks within the Park while also enjoying the culturally rich Sherpa villages along the way. The trek lasts for 9-12 days and needs special permissions. Otherwise, there are plenty of other trails that are loved by most trek enthusiasts, which is usually guided by local Sherpas.

1. Mount Taboche: a peak that is 6500 meters high, is another scenic spot that tourists hike up to through Khumbu Valley amongst the Himalayas.

2. Kala Pattar: The highest point on the Everest Base Camp trek is Kala Patthar, which isn’t classified as a mountain but the peak offers a spectacular view of the sunrise and a close look at the Mount Everest.

3. How to Reach Overview

The Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla is closest to the Sagarmatha National Park, but since it is not an international airport, travellers first need to reach the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, which offers flights to Lukla which take no longer than around half an hour to reach the terminal. From Lukla, visitors can reach Sagarmatha by trekking for about two days. In case one wishes to trek for a longer period, they can choose to catch a flight to Phaplu or Tumlingtar and then trek to Sagarmatha, which would take around five days from Phaplu and ten days from Tumlingtar.

Helicopter rides from Kathmandu to Sagarmatha are available for those who do not wish to trek, which land at the Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar and Namche Bazaar within the Sagarmatha National Park. Visitors cannot reach Sagarmatha National Park directly by road, although they can opt to take a bus from Kathmandu to Jiri, which is about 100 kms away from the National Park, which can be covered by a trek of around ten days. One can also choose to go to Salleri by bus, which is in close proximity to Phaplu, and can then trek for around five days to reach the Park.

The only way to get around in Sagarmatha National Park is on foot as there is no public transportation available. Since there is a lot of endemic wildlife present in the Park, it is advisable to go for hiking and trekking around the place before sunset, as it can get dangerous in the dark.

Visitors should ideally travel light and carry edibles and water during the day, although food stalls and markets are available, it is best to keep some handy as the trek can get tiring and the routes might lead away from the populated areas. Sagarmatha National Park is mostly visited by those who are interested in and are physically competent enough to hike and trek through the stay, so it is best advised for people who do not enjoy such activities or might face some health hazards to not take the risk of doing the same.
