The lifeline of Paro, the Paro Chhu is a picturesque river worth spending some time at. A tributary of Wong Chhu, the Paro River passes through Paro Taktsang and Paro Dzong, and give both the grand monasteries a glorious look. Origin and Course of Paro Chhu
Paro Chhu is fed by Himalayan glaciers in Tibet and covers some major towns in Bhutan, such as Thimphu, Paro and Haa. It finally drains into the Brahmaputra River in southern Bhutan.
Source Chhuzom (chhu-river | zom-join) is where Paro chhu meets Wong Chhu. According to the traditional beliefs of Bhutan, this confluence of the two rivers is considered to be inauspicious. Hence, to ward off evil spells, Chorten are built at the confluence of the father river with the mother river.
Paro Chhu's clean and clear waters are an ideal choice for adventure sports like kayaking and rafting. There are travel companies which organise these activities in the river. Proper security equipment such as lifeboat, belt etc, are provided to you for your safety.
The river is at a stretch of 7 kilometres with a few boulder rapids and small slopes that's good for beginners/intermediate kayakers too.
The Paro Chhu, visible from the Paro Airport and snaking around the valley, is best visited at its location next to the Paro Dzong. One can reach the Paro River on the way to the dzong.
