Place Massena is Nice's main square, in Alpes-Maritimes. It is 2 minutes away from Promenade des Anglais. Lined with shops and restaurants, it is a great place to visit for live shows, concerts and other events. With its checkered floor, fountain called Fountain du Soleil, and illuminating statues, it especially looks surreal at night.
With the tramline's recent renovation, the area has been open to pedestrians, reclaiming its rightful place as an authentic Mediterranean square. Lined with stone pines and palm trees, the walk around the square becomes all the more interesting.
The magnificent architecture of the "Fountain of the Sun," which opened in 1956, is located on the plaza's south side, right in the centre of the historic Charles-Albert neighbourhood. Five statues made of bronze and carved by Alfred Janniot are set on top. The works of the renowned architect serve as a symbol of the Riviera city's beauty.
Public events have traditionally taken place at the Place Masséna. It has been a primary spot for concerts, especially during the summer festivals, Carnival Parades, military parades, seasonal festivities, and other celebrations. With great places to eat, beautifully painted buildings, hidden alleys, and multiple shopping centres, Place Massena is a perfect spot to begin your tour. It wouldn't be wrong to refer to Place Massena as a stunning colour explosion. A mostly clear blue sky is beautifully contrasted with the vibrant colours of the buildings.
The seven statues in the square representing the continents and interactions between the diverse demographics in today's society are illuminated in vivid shades at night.
