A 90 minute trip from Mexico City will take you to Xochimilco, which is called "The Mexican Venice" by some people.
Xochimilco has some beautiful canals and artificial islands or floating gardens built by Aztecs known as chinampas, which are listed in the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Taking a ride on a vibrant trajinera (boat) is something you can't miss. Some local miriachi bands perform in musical boats which creates a lovely authentic Mexican ambience. If you have a basic knowledge of Spanish, you'd be able to haggle and reduce the cost for boating.
