Polhena Beach, Matara Overview

Polhena Beach is one of the safest beaches in Sri Lanka with waist-high water and coral reefs. Swimming here is like swimming in a swimming pool but with an extraordinary aquatic life such a numerous giant green turtles, and fish which makes one’s dive even more memorable.

The beach is well maintained, and the white sand and the clear blue water make a perfect holiday spot. The water is shallow for a long stretch as the waves break far out, so it is ideal for non-swimmers as well. This beach is a local hangout spot, small and perfect for a traveller who wants to see the local life. There are bathing and changing spots where one can put on beachwear. There are also some shops on the beach where one can buy pretty seashells and grab a bite in one of the restaurants nearby.

Things To Do at Polhena Beach

There are shops selling beach wears so one can just put on a swimsuit and swim with the giant green turtles.

There are places like Polhena beach resort, Sri Eco-Cottage, Polhena reef resort, Sayuri beach, moon house, loads of small hotels and guest houses nearby where one can stay and enjoy the views of the sea. 

At the end of the beach, one can do some excellent, safe and free snorkelling.

Tips While Visiting Polhena Beach

It’s a famous place among locals and foreigners and gets busy on weekends, so it’s best to avoid during this time in case one is looking for peaceful relaxation.

Do not pick up the turtles on the beach. While one can freely enjoy swimming alongside them, try not to disturb the creatures.

There are some beautiful deep pools in the reef, but one shouldn’t swim near the red flag at high tide.

One can carry a beach umbrella to set up camp.

A cosy restaurant located near Polhena beach where one can grab a bottle of beer or a cup of coffee and enjoy some delicious Sri Lankan and Asian food. The restaurant is also vegetarian-friendly serving a wide range of rice dishes, kottu and crepes.

How To Reach Polhena Beach

The Polhena beach is about 5 kms from Matara town. A south expressway connects Colombo to Matara and the travel time is just 2 hours. Exit the southern freeway and head towards Matara town. In the second signal (T-junction) turn right into the Galle road, and one will have to drive for about 3 kms or take a tuk-tuk on Matara-Galle road to reach Polhena.

It is also connected by train and the travel time is 3.5 hours. Most of the train journey is along the sea coast, and one can see beaches on the way. From Matara town or train station one can take a tuk-tuk for less than 500 LKR. One can also take a local bus that goes to Weligama or Galle and takes a tuk-tuk from the main road.
