Dickwella Beach, Matara Overview

The Dickwella beach is a tranquil, peaceful and large gold beach in the Dickwella town of Sri Lanka. The main Dickwella beach has a length of two kilometres. Rocks and reefs protect it from the winds and high waves, so this is one of the ideal "bathing" beaches in Sri Lanka.

Dickwella beach offers clear blue ocean water, numerous coconut trees where one can set up a hammock, watch the sunset and the fishermen catching fish. It is also a famous beach in Sri Lanka for surfing & swimming. Dickwella Beach in Sri Lanka gives a perfect beach experience for families and large groups since it is protected by sandbars and reefs, making it ideal for swimming.

Things To Do At Dickwella Beach

Rent or buy a hammock and snack on some tasty meals and ice cream sold around the beach. 

Several masseurs on the beach offer their services to visitors. Pampering oneself with a soothing massage on a deck chair under an umbrella is a great way to spend moments of leisure.

There's also a Sunday market of Dickwella near the beach that attracts quite a lot of locals and foreign tourists for great bargains.

While visiting with friends, one can also play volleyball on the beach. 

Visit The Wewurukannala temple, which has the biggest statue of a sitting Buddha in Sri Lanka (50 meters), and there's a corridor leading the climb on the figure. This corridor is quite notable as it has horrifying pictures of the punishment of sinners.

Tips While Visiting Dickwella Beach

Parasols and deck chairs can be rented for a good time on the beach.

For foreign tourists, it is also encouraged to book a day at the impressive Dickwella Beach Resort and Spa. This spa is very famous in the vicinity, where one can get a full-body herbal massage.

There aren't many hotels in the area, so tourists are advised to book the hotels in advance to avoid last-minute hassles.

Dikwella South has a large market, several banks and ATMs, Cargills. There are food, several supermarkets and even a liquor store in the beach area.

One can rent offices motorbikes and cars through the hotels or guesthouses. Per day rental cost for a simple scooter is 1700 LKR.

Food and Restaurants at Dickwella Beach

The small stalls near the beach offer the most eccentric Sri Lankan cuisines and definitely must be visited when one visits the beach. The food served on the stalls is not just flavorful, colourful, and aromatic but also pocket-friendly. The nearby restaurants and small diners are often some of the best places to visit for local cuisine and unique dishes. There are also good inexpensive cafes along the main road.

Best Time To Visit Dickwella Beach

The months of April to June, have the least rain and thus attract the most crowd. July to October can often be unpleasant due to rainfall and storms that make swimming in the beach dangerous.

How To Reach Dickwella Beach

From Colombo international airport, it is a direct 5-hour journey of 200 kilometres by taxi which costs up to 20,000 LKR. Taking the Southern Expressway may save some time. Dickwella is along the busiest Tangalle Road, which connects Matara and Tangalle and it is a little walk from the road towards the beach.

From Colombo Railway Station, one has to reach Galle highway bus stop from where buses run every 15 minutes for Matara. It is a two-hour journey. Direct bus EX 1-1 will drop one at Matara bus stop, and a thirty-minute tuk-tuk journey will take one to Dickwella beach. 

From Kataragama, the buses are not frequent, but few direct buses commute to Dickwella. 

The Dickwella bus stop is in the city centre. From Galle centre bus station buses running every two minutes for an hour and a half long journey to Dickwella bus stop.
