Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto Overview
Kyoto Railway Museum is the largest railway museum in Japan, spread across 31,000 square meters near Umekoji Park. Opened in 2016 on the site of the former Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, it displays 54 pieces of rolling stock, including steam locomotives and shinkansen cars, alongside a restored 1914 roundhouse designated an Important Cultural Property. Interactive exhibits, a train simulator, and a rooftop terrace overlooking passing trains make it a strong pick for families with children interested in trains and engineering.
Operated by the Transportation Culture Promotion Foundation and run by JR West, Kyoto Railway Museum opened on April 29, 2016, replacing the smaller Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum on the same grounds. The museum's collection spans steam, diesel, and electric trains, including a Class 500 Shinkansen nose section, and covers the history of Japanese rail travel from the 19th century to today. A steam locomotive still offers short rides around the yard on select days. It is a three-minute walk from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station and about a 20-minute walk or short bus/taxi ride from Kyoto Station, making it an easy add-on for a half-day visit. It is closed on Wednesdays and during the year-end/New Year period.
