Kyoto International Manga Museum, Kyoto Overview
Kyoto International Manga Museum occupies the former Tatsuike Elementary School building in Nakagyo Ward, a short walk from Karasuma Oike subway station. Jointly run by Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University since November 2006, it holds close to 300,000 manga items, including around 50,000 volumes shelved along the three-floor "Wall of Manga" that visitors can pull down and read anywhere in the building, including on the outdoor lawn. The building itself, dating to 1928-1937, is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
The museum opened in November 2006 inside the preserved Tatsuike Elementary School structures, built between 1928 and 1937 in a Modernist style, and later designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Its open-shelf "Wall of Manga" runs across three floors, organized by decade and genre, while roughly 250,000 further items sit in closed-stack research collections used mainly by scholars. Visitors can read freely on-site, watch kamishibai (paper theater) performances, and view plaster hand casts left by visiting manga artists. Admission runs around 900 yen for adults. The museum is closed on Wednesdays and during the New Year period; Google reviews put it at 4.2 stars from over 6,500 ratings.
