Chorabari Lake, Kedarnath Overview

Located at a distance of around 3 kms from the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand, Chorabari Lake is a quaint lake which also goes by the name of Gandhi Tal. The crystal clear gorgeous lake draws a lot of tourists from far and wide besides the regular devotees. Tucked cosily in the backdrop of the mighty Himalayas, the lake is perched at a towering altitude of 3900 m above the sea level. Chorabari Tal originates from the Chorabari Bamak Glacier and can be reached through a short trek from the Kedarnath Temple.

As per historical records, in 1948, the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were also immersed in the lake. In addition to that, it is also believed that the revered Hindu God - Lord Shiva used to impart sermons of yoga to the Saptarishis at the spot. Hence, making it is a holy destination besides an important historic one. Another popular attraction near the lake is the Bhairava Temple. Chorabari Tal is one of the most popular picnic spots in the region and is also blessed with enormous scenic panoramic views of the landscape.

  1. As most of the trek from the Kedarnath Temple to Chorabari Tal is to be done on foot, remember to carry your trekking shoes.
  2. Do not forget to carry food and water as there are no stalls or eateries at the spot.

How to Reach

From Gaurikund, Chorabari Lake is only at a distance of 17.5 km. You can travel in palanquins and on horse backs from here. But once you have paid your respect to the gods, the journey from the temple can be achieved mostly on foot. From Kedarnath Temple, you can start walking towards the iron bridge that will straight away lead you to the Chorabari Tal.
