Kampot Pepper History & Significance

The pepper industry in Kampot dates back to the 13th century, which covered about six districts in Kampot province including the neighbouring town Kep. The ideal climate and the fertile soil make perfect growing conditions for pepper cultivation in Kampot province. Black pepper is the most widely grown type of pepper, followed by red, green and white variations.

During the French colonization, Kampot alone produced more than 800 tons of pepper a year, making it the largest producer of pepper in Cambodia. Pepper farming suffered during the Khmer Rouge period, which witnessed a massive decline in pepper production, affecting thousands of local families. From 1980 onwards, this changed and now Kampot pepper is one of the best in SE Asia and is among the largest pepper producers in Cambodia.
