Phnom chhngok cave temple, Kampot Overview

Phnom Chhngok is a temple located close to Kampot in Cambodia. It is the only cave temple in Cambodia and is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. The temple ruins are older than the Angkor structures belonging to the Funan era, and it is one of the attractions while visiting Kampot. Phnom Chhngok cave temple is popular among the tourists for its Pre-Angkor period ruins and its remote countryside location surrounded by green fields.

Phnom Chhngok Cave Temple History & Significance

Located in the Phnom Chhnork mountain, the cave temple was built around the 7th century during the Funan era. The temple was built as a sanctuary amidst the stalagmites and stalactites that are formed within the cave. There are also ruins of a brick structure near the idol, which is considered to belong to the 5th century making it one of the oldest monuments in Cambodia.  Some part of the limestone formations are in the shape of elephants, which are referred to as Phnom Sorsia.  

Phnom Chhnork is a short walk through a quilt of rice paddies from Wat Ang Sdok, where a monk collects the entry fee and a gaggle of friendly local kids offer their services as guides. 

Most of the touristic visitors go to Phnom Chhnork by an organized tour from Kampot town.

On your walk, you'll first pass through the paddy fields after which you need to get the hillside by crossing over a small makeshift bridge. You need to climb around 200 stairs to reach the entrance of the cave temple. You'll get to see the beautiful views of the countryside of Cambodia from the top.

How To Reach Phnom chhngok cave temple

Phnom Chhngok Cave temple is located about 8 km from Kampot. Tuks-tuks can be hired from Kampot town centre to reach the temple, which would cost about 20 USD for a return trip, which can also be shared. You can also rent a motorbike for about 10 USD per day from Kampot downtown.
