Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat, is located at a distance of around 23 km from Ahmedabad on the western bank of Sabarmati river. Gandhinagar, one of India's few planned cities encompasses Akshardham Temple, one of the country's most beautiful temple.

Gandhi Ashram

The Gandhi Ashram stands as an epitome of the nation's struggle for freedom and the various national movements that took place during the colonial era. This was one of the residences of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, generally called Mahatma Gandhi, who lived there for about twelve years along with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi.

History of Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar is a relatively new city, established in 1960, catering to the requirement of a capital city when the state of Mumbai was divided into two states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Mumbai thus became the capital for Maharashtra and Gandhinagar of Gujarat. It derives its name obviously from our Father of the Nation- Mahatma Gandhi, this being his birthplace. The city holds historical relevance as it was a centre of many national freedom movements. Designed by the chief architect H.K. Mewada and his assistant Prakash M. Apte, Gandhinagar was built on the same land which was once a part of the Pethapur state in the 13th century.
