Mitchell Park

Mitchell Park, Durban Overview

A favourite family destination, the Mitchell Park is today a zoo of small animals and several gardens, picnic areas and play areas for kids.

The zoo started out as an Ostrich farm in 1910 but was quickly converted into a zoo due to losses. It started acquiring numerous large animals from the region like lions, elephants, crocodiles and so on. Today, the park only houses small animals that appeal to the kids like raccoons, monkeys, buck, cranes, wallabies and so on. Crocodiles are found in the zoo as well. A large aviary is home to a plethora of birds which can be viewed from up close. There is a large play area for kids with many swings, see-saws, slides and sandboxes, along with many gardens that are just perfect for a family picnic. There is a tea garden as well, with lovely flowerbeds and options for having a variety of teas. The park actively strives to educate children on the importance of the environment and the wildlife and it's conservation as well.
