Mitchell Park

Mitchell Park, Durban Overview

A favourite family destination, Mitchell Park is a zoo of small animals and several gardens, picnic areas and play areas for kids. There is also a tea garden, with lovely flowerbeds and options for having a variety of teas.

The zoo started as an Ostrich farm in 1910 but quickly converted into a zoo due to losses. It started acquiring numerous large animals from the region like lions, elephants, crocodiles, etc. Today, the park only houses small animals that appeal to the kids, like raccoons, monkeys, bucks, cranes, wallabies and so on. Crocodiles are found in the zoo as well. A large aviary is a home to many birds, which can be viewed up close. There is a large play area for kids with many swings, see-saws, slides and sandboxes, and many gardens that are perfect for a family picnic. The park actively strives to educate children on the importance of the environment and wildlife.
