Ballalarayana Durga, Chikmagalur Overview

Ballalarayana Durga is a hill fort in Chikmagalur that is situated in the village of Bettabalige between the towns of Kottegehara and Kalasa. Boasting of rich history and cultural significant, the vantage point is perched at a height of 1509 metres and offers some of the best panoramic vistas and picturesque views in the region. Cosily tucked up in the Western Ghats, it can only be reached through a trek amidst the dense forests. Although the hill fort is currently in ruins with only periphery walls, a few arches and a basement, it is a major tourist destination, a popular picnic spot in addition to being an ideal campsite.

Trek to Ballalarayana Durga Fort

As stated earlier, Ballalarayana Durga Fort is a popular trekking destination. However, the trail is a difficult one to climb and is a little difficult for the amateur trekkers. The most common trek route is the one that starts at Mundaje and proceeds to Bandeje Arbi before finally leading to Ballalarayana Durga.

Tips

  1. As the fort stands on isolated grounds, it is advisable to carry enough food and drinks. There are no shops in far vicinity.
  2. If you are planning to camp, you will also have to carry your camps and other things of requirement. There are almost no individuals or camping organisations available to assist you.
  3. If you are driving, be sure of the fuel. The nearest petrol pump is 8 km away in Udije.

Best Time to Visit

The most suitable time to visit the fort is between the months of November and May. It is inadvisable to visit here during the rainy season as not only do the rocky surface gets slippery but the rains give birth to a lot of leeches and other insects as well. The trek becomes all the more difficult and the streams are also hard to cross.

How to Reach

The nearest city to the fort is Chikmagalur. Regular KSRTC Buses ply from Dharmasthala (near Chikmagalur) to the neighbouring towns of Mundaje or Sunkasaale. The trek for the fort starts from either of the two places.
