Gopeshwar, Chamoli Overview

Gopeshwar is a small scenic town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is the headquarters of the Chamoli district known for its scenic beauty and the ancient Hindu temples. Perched at an elevation of 1,400 m above the sea level, you can enjoy the splendid views of the Garhwal Himalayas laden with the dense vegetation of the deodar and pine trees that surround this small town. According to the beliefs of the locals, Gopeshwar is named after Lord Krishna.

The weather here is extremely pleasant all around the year, and hence, Gopeshwar is a perfect getaway from the nearby cities that can be visited at any time of the year. The town is equally famous for its picturesque sceneries and the ancient temples. Gopeshwar is mostly famous for its Shiva temple, Anusuya Devi temple, Chandika Devi temple and Gopinath temple. Anusuya Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati, considered to be one of the avatars of Mata Parvati. Rudranath is another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva surrounded by the holy kund with the backdrop of mighty Himalayas. Badrinath is the holy shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is also one of the temples of the famous Char Dham Yatra. Due to the number of holy shrines, many devotees visit Chamoli and offer their prayers to these religious places.

You can trek the various peaks and temples in and around Gopeshwar which is an equivalent attraction for many adventure lovers. The famous trek to Tungnath temple, which is the highest Shiva temple isn't undertaken only by the devotees but also by the avid trekkers for the splendid views that it has to offer. Just 5 km away from Gopeshwar is the Saggar village which is the starting point of the 22 km long trek to Rudranath.
