Royal Regalia Museum, Brunei Overview

Royal Regalia Museum, located at the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan, is dedicated to the Sultan of Brunei. It depicts the life of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the history of his rule.

Royal Regalia Museum is an important museum in regard to the history of Brunei and has many exhibitions featuring how the royals work and rule including the replica of Sultan’s silver jubilee celebration chariot. It is home to some of the most valuable items of the royal family as well.

Architecture & Exhibits at Royal Regalia Museum

  • Royal Regalia Museum is a golden dome shaped building which is decorated with special mosaic designs. The shape of this building is semi circular and the interior is constructed mostly with white marble.
  • The front hall of the museum is a large room which features the Sultan’s gold chariot in which after his coronation he used to take rounds of the city in and the other chariot which was used in 1968 during the queen’s visit to Brunei.
  • The museum is basically divided into two sections; the first one describes the life of the Sultan of Brunei through many holograms and dioramas and the other part of the museum is dedicated to the military regalia and various other royal treasures.
  • The first section describes the current Sultan’s life is details and even has replica’s of some of his palace’s rooms and halls. The most interesting is the replica of Sultan’s throne. There are also many other personal things like clothes, crowns, etc. which were used by the royal family on display.
  • The second section of the museum is sheer opulence as it contains a large portion of royal treasure as well as the many gifts Brunei has received over time from the other countries. From gold plated plates to diamonds encrusted decoration pieces like vases, etc. there are many things to look at from various countries like Saudi Arabia, Peru, Cambodia, etc.

How to Reach Royal Regalia Museum

The museum is located at the centre of the Bandar Seri Begawan. It is opposite the Hyatt Regency Hotel and is also near the Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudein Mosque and is a walking distance from almost anywhere in Bandar Seri Begawan as the museum is located at the ultimate heart of the city, in extreme centre.

Need to Know

  • Visitors have to remove the shoes before entering the museum. One can get slippers from the front reception.
  • Bags are not allowed inside the museum; they must keep it in a locker room. 
  • No photography is allowed inside the museum. Visitors can only take pictures in the front hall of the museum, in rest of the area, photography is strictly prohibited.
  • Entry inside the museum is not allowed after 4:30 PM.
  • Visitors will be required to sign their names and nationalities on the reception desk, so carry passports as the reception desk may ask for them to verify the details provided.
