Malay Technology Museum, Brunei Overview

Malay Technology Museum, also known as Muzium Teknologi Melayu locally, is located on the Kota Batu Road in Bandar Seri Bengawan. The museum focuses on the traditional use of technology in Brunei and is a great place to learn about the technological and cultural development of the country.

The building of the museum is said to be donated by the Dutch/Shell Group of Companies in 1984. Malay Technology Museum is a great learning spot for all those interested in the history of Brunei, and especially in the history of the famous water village, Kampong Ayer.

Exhibits at Malay Technology Museum

Malay Technology Museum has three exhibitions, each one of them providing visitors with different information about the history of Brunei.

The first exhibition is named ‘Water Village Traditional House Gallery’ and it shows how the houses were built in ancient times. It focuses on the architecture of the water houses which were built during the time of flourishing of the settlement of Kampong Ayer.
The second exhibition, ‘Water Village Traditional Technology Gallery’ is all about the various crafts which the ancient people used to involve themselves in. This exhibition takes one to the journey of how cottage and handicraft industries were set in the water village.
The third and final exhibition, ‘Water Village Traditional House Gallery’ shows the technology of the ancient people and the methods which they invented themselves to make their lives easier.

The museum is not very interactive but is very informative with several models, mannequins and boards in English available to educate tourists with the history of development in Brunei.
