The stunning Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Kiarong is the largest mosque of Brunei. Built in honor of the current Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, it is one of the two national mosques of Brunei.

History of Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

Built in 1992, the Mosque was commissioned in celebration of the 25th year of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s reign in Brunei. Sultan Bolkiah’s reign is still ongoing. The mosque complex is adorned with 29 golden domes because the Sultan is the 29th ruler of his dynasty. The mosque even has a private entrance for the Sultan’s use. 

Architecture

  • The Jame asr' Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is considered to be a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture throughout South Asia.
  • The grand imposing structure is so overwhelmingly large that It can accommodate over 4000 worshippers at a time, and this sacred building is visible from the downtown area of Gadong.
  • The mosque’s architecture shows influences of the Turkish style, with its four tall minarets towering over the golden domes.
  • The artfully dsigned landscape features beautiful gardens with fountains, pools and beautiful flora. 

How to Reach Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

The public bus network in Brunei is a very cheap and efficient means of travel. To get to the mosque, take the Number 1 bus from the central bus station and simply ask for the driver to drop you off at “the Mosque”. 

Need to Know

  • Dress conservatively while visiting the mosque. Make sure to cover your shoulder, knees and head. A robe is available at the mosque for the people to cover their head.
  • Shoes must be taken off before entering the mosque. 
  • Photography and videography is frowned upon, and sometimes outright forbidden within the mosque (though not outside the mosque, within the mosque complex) as it goes against Islamic traditions.
