The Begijnhof was once home to the beguines, emancipated lay-women who led a pious and celibate life.
Home to the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict, the white washed walls of the Beguinage symbolise tranquility. Situated at the edge of a canal, this cluster of houses was founded in 1245 as a home to women from all backgrounds dedicated to charity work, yet not bound by any religious vows. The first house has been converted to a small museum. Stroll around the lush green courtyard gardens as you soak in the quaintness of the scene.
