Bokeo Nature reserve is a national park located near Ban Houayxay village in Bokeo province in Northwest Laos. Being on the banks of the Mekong River, the reserve area is home to precious gems, abundant wildlife and floral life. It was created to protect its population of the black-cheeked gibbon, which are rare species of monkeys unique to this place among many wildlife species. The Gibbon Experience at Bokeo Nature Reserve

The only way to access Bokeo park is via The Gibbon Experience, a project through which you can book all tours since 2007. The Gibbon Experience project was established in 2004 The mission is to conserve the forest lands from logging, reckless agriculture and poaching of wild animals in Huay Xai region. The organisation conduct guided tours to conserve nature and wildlife, which creates jobs for locals supporting indigenous people. They also promote and support sustainable agriculture.

So they have established the Gibbon experience has part ecotourism and a part sustenance project for the locals. They are funded by the government, but a large part of the revenue is from tourism.

There are tours to watch the gibbons in their natural habitat. There are also a number of trekking options, some of which include overnight stays in treehouses. You can also take up zip-lining for an adventurous experience amidst the mountains.

The nearest town to reach Bokeo Nature reserve is to arrive at Ban Houay Xay town. The town has an airport and there are direct flights from Luang Prabang and Vientiane. 

There are many buses and minivans available from cities like Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. The direct bus from Vientiane takes over 25 hours though. The travel time is more than 10 hours from other cities too and the price is between 20 to 25 USD per person. 

You can also get to Houay Xay from Luang Prabang by speedboat or slow boats which take between 6 to 10 hours. There are boats also from Pak Beng and takes less than 6 hours. The price depends on the boat, the number of people and the traveling season and approximately costs about 30 to 60 USD for a one-way trip.
