Camel Festival in Bikaner is a two-day event organized annually in January in the land of camels, Bikaner which is situated in the north-west Indian state of Rajasthan. The Festival is a grand celebration of the rich culture of Bikaner that draws tourists from all over the world to this land of camels.

The event has camel safaris, camel rides, processions, folk dance and various other cultural activities and competitions. On the occasion of the festival, the camels are dresses in bright and colourful ornaments and bridles. The burst of vibrant colours in the golden dunes is a sight that cannot match any other celebration in the world.

History of Camel Festival

The Camel Festival is a grand celebration dedicated to the ship of the desert, the mighty Camel, who survives in the harsh weather conditions of Bikaner since the time the city was founded by Rao Bika Ji. The event was initiated by the Department of Tourism, Art and Culture of the Government of Rajasthan.

It is held every year to rejoice their contributions that have proven to be essential for the major activities of the locals that include routine work, transportation and serve as an integral part of the Indian Security system commissioned to secure the Indo-Pak border. The camel is not just some mammal here but is the lifeline of Bikaner, and the festival is only a small way to celebrate the ship of the desert and thank them for their contributions to our lives.

Celebrations at Camel Festival

The two-day event begins on a large scale with a colourful ceremonial procession followed by an Inauguration and a Recital by the Indian Army. The celebrations also include entertainment performances and several competitions that visitors can actively participate like the Earthen Pot Race, Beauty Pageant Competition (Miss Marwar), Mr Bikaner Competition, Musical Chair, Wrestling, Tug of war etc. Visitors can watch the several programmes scheduled during the day and admire and shop traditional Rajasthani apparel, accessories and artefacts as gifts and souvenirs.

There are food kiosks that serve traditional Rajasthani cuisine making it a perfect event for foodies too. One can find many Rajasthani dishes like Daal Bati Churma, Laal Maas, Mohan Maas, Ker Sangri, Gatte Ki Sabzi, Kadhi, Boondi ka Raita, Bajre ki Roti, Bajre ki Poori, various Rajasthani style Pulao etc. Do not miss the delicious Rajasthani deserts like the Mohanthaal, Besan Barfi, Churma Laddoo, Balushahi, Badam ka Halva, Mawa Kachori, Gujiya, Ghevar etc.
