Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Moshi - Trek to Umbwe Camp
  • Your day starts early with a briefing and breakfast.
  • A one-hour drive from Moshi takes you to Umbwe Village (1,490 m/4,890 ft).
  • Guides and porters will help organize your gear, and you'll get a packed lunch.
  • You begin your hike at Umbwe Gate, just above the village.
  • The first part is a gentle walk on a winding track for about an hour.
  • Then, it gets tougher as you go uphill through a dense forest with tall rubber and fig trees.
  • Some spots may have steep roots and rocks to climb.
  • You'll find Umbwe Camp in the forest, with nearby caves.
  • Enjoy a hot meal at the camp and spend the night there.
  • Start your day with a cup of tea or coffee before breakfast.
  • After breakfast, you'll embark on a steep climb through thinning forest.
  • The hike takes you to Giant Erica, Heather, and drier air.
  • Continue ascending a ridge with steep drops on both sides.
  • With luck, the clouds might clear, revealing Uhuru Peak above.
  • Lunch is served during the trek.
  • You'll enter a zone with giant groundsels (Senecio Kilimanjaro), a Kilimanjaro treasure.
  • Spend the night at Barranco Camp, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.
  • Begin your morning hike by heading east, crossing ridges and valleys.
  • You'll join the Mweka Route, which you'll use for your descent.
  • Hike up a ridge towards Barafu Hut, where a hot lunch awaits.
  • Note that the last water source before Barafu Camp is in the Karanga Valley.
  • Enjoy an early dinner before getting some rest.
  • After breakfast, continue your ascent up a steep ridge towards the imposing Barranco Wall.
  • Once you reach the top, enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Kilimanjaro with Kibo's glaciers above.
  • Descend into the lush Karanga Valley, where you'll find the Karanga Valley campsite.
  • After a hot lunch at the camp, you'll have the afternoon for rest or exploration.
  • This shorter day is crucial for acclimatization as you prepare for your summit push.
  • Have early dinner and take rest.
  • Rise at around 11:30 PM.
  • Have some tea and biscuits before starting the climb.
  • This is the most challenging part of the route, a 6-hour climb through rocky terrain and glaciers.
  • Reach Stella Point on the crater rim (5,685 m/18,650 ft) where you can rest and witness a stunning sunrise.
  • Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak.
  • Enjoy your achievement at the summit.
  • Descend for 3 hours back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest.
  • Collect your gear and hike down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m/10,170 ft) through rocky paths and forest.
  • Have dinner and overnight stay in Mwenka Camp.
  • After, embark on a short, scenic, 3-hour hike back to the park gate.
  • At Mweka Gate, you'll have the opportunity to sign a register.
  • Successful climbers receive summit certificates here.
  • From Mweka Gate, continue your descent to Mweka Village, which may involve a muddy 3 km, 1-hour hike if the road is impassable for vehicles.
  • In Mweka Village, enjoy a delicious hot lunch.
  • Finally, you'll be driven back to your hotel in Moshi.
