Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate
  • Depart from Moshi City and head towards Machame Park Gate for registration.
  • Trek through the lush rainforest to Machame Camp, where dinner will be served.
  • Overnight stay at Machame Camp.
  • Start your day with breakfast before setting off on a trek from Machame Camp to Shira Camp.
  • You'll cover about 5-6 kilometers during a 4–6-hour hike, gradually leaving behind the lush rainforest for rocky, alpine terrain.
  • Enjoy breathtaking views and observe the changing landscape as you ascend along a steep ridge and cross valleys.
  • Keep an eye out for unique plants and maybe even spot some wildlife along the way.
  • Arrive at Shira Camp in the late afternoon, where a satisfying dinner awaits before settling in for the night surrounded by the tranquility of the mountain.
  • After breakfast, embark on a trek from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp.
  • The journey covers approximately 10-12 kilometers and takes about 6-7 hours.
  • Traverse the Shira Plateau, ascending a ridge towards the southeast with views of Kibo Peak.
  • Pass by notable landmarks like the Lava Tower and experience changes in altitude that aid acclimatization.
  • Descend to Barranco Camp, situated at a similar elevation, where you'll enjoy dinner and spend the night, preparing your body for the challenges ahead.
  • Enjoy breakfast before starting the trek to Barafu Camp.
  • Trek around 9-10 kilometers, taking about 7-8 hours.
  • Climb the steep Barranco Wall, pass through Karanga Valley, and reach the Mweka Trail junction.
  • Admire beautiful views of the summit along the South Circuit.
  • Arrive at Barafu Camp, set up camp, and spend the night preparing mentally for the final climb.
  • Begin the ascent to Uhuru Peak between midnight and 2:00 AM.
  • Trek towards Stella Point on the crater rim, ascending through heavy scree.
  • Take a short rest at Stella Point and witness a magnificent sunrise.
  • Continue the ascent through snow towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
  • Descend to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch.
  • Trekking duration varies but typically takes about 12-14 hours.
  • After breakfast, begin the descent towards Mweka Park Gate.
  • Receive summit certificates at the gate.
  • The trekking duration is approximately 4-6 hours.
  • Expect wet and muddy conditions at lower elevations.
  • Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi to conclude the Kilimanjaro trekking adventure.
