How To Reach Taiwan

The easiest ways to access Taiwan are by plane and by boat.

Reaching Taiwan by Air

The major airports of Taiwan are Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), about 40 km west of Taipei, Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA), Taichung International Airport (RMQ) and Hualien Airport (HUN). When you are checking in, you will have to show the authorities an onward or return flight ticket. There are also domestic airports at Magong, Taitung and Kinmen, connecting the main island to Taiwan's outlying islands. Taiwan's main international carriers are China Airlines, EVA Air and Starlux Airlines. EVA Air begins a non-stop Delhi to Taipei service on 1 December 2026, the first direct link between India and Taiwan; from other Indian cities, travellers connect through Hanoi, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur.

Reaching Taiwan by Water

There are no regular passenger ferries between Taiwan's main island and any other country, so flying is the practical way in. Within the region, Mawei and Huangqi in mainland China's Fujian province connect by ferry to Taiwan's Matsu Islands, and Xiamen and Quanzhou connect to Kinmen, on the restricted Mini Three Links routes. From Matsu there is an onward ferry to Keelung, and Mawei sells an inclusive ticket that combines the ferry with a domestic flight to Taipei. These routes are not open to most foreign travellers, so check before planning around them.
