The Valley of the Kings holds 63 known royal tombs cut into the hillside on the Nile's west bank, of which 12 are open to visitors at any given time on a rotating basis.
Tutankhamun's tomb, found intact by Howard Carter in 1922, is the most famous and usually costs extra to enter, but tombs like Seti I and Ramesses VI have equally elaborate wall paintings without the crowds. It sits across the river from Luxor's temples, so most visitors combine the two in one day, starting here early before the heat sets in.
