New Hope Baptist Church is one of the oldest Black Churches in New Jersey. It initially began as a mission, organized by two sisters, Addie and Maggie Vine, in a room on Drift Street and later got incorporated as a church in 1911. New Hope Church has had many famous personalities as its members including late Whitney Houston, who grew up singing in the church Choir group. Although this stately structure was initially formed by African Americans, this church welcomes all worshippers with bright smiles.

Established in 1822, Clinton Memorial Church is the oldest active black congregation in Newark. The Church was initially located in a building on Academy Street but later got shifted to a Victorian Gothic style building in Broadway. Clinton Memorial Church made history by electing the first female pastor in 1999. Founded in 1666, the Old First Presbytarian Church is located in Downtown Newark and has a rich history. In its early days, it was the seat of government of Newark and the pastors served as the first presidents of Yale, Princeton and Harvard Universities. The house of Prayer was founded back in 1849 and is the third episcopal church in Newark.
