Beaches in Hikkaduwa

Akurala beach, located in Hikkaduwa is a quiet beach escape. The sandy shores, immaculate reefs and clear water present a perfect beach experience. Located in south-west Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is endowed with palm trees by the shorelines, clean blue waters all this alongside the backdrop of the warm sun. The seas of Hikkaduwa host ocean life at its absolute best, varied species of fishes, colourful corals, warm, shelled turtles and much more.

Discovered in the early 1960’s Hikkaduwa saw tourists from across the globe flooding the city. Narigama is one such famous beach on the coast of Hikkaduwa. Narigama presents serenity at its best; the mornings are quiet with a good view of the sunrise and the time before sunset gets breezy followed by gorgeous orange skies overlooking the sea.

Pitiwella Beach sits on the coast road south of Hikkaduwa, roughly halfway to Galle, in a small sheltered bay backed by palms and fishing boats. There is no strip of guesthouses, bars or surf schools behind it, which is what separates it from Hikkaduwa, Narigama and Turtle Beach further north, so it stays quiet even in season and suits an hour in the shade rather than a full day out.

Situated on one of the best surfing cities in Sri Lanka, Turtle Beach in Hikkaduwa is a popular turtle-spotting attraction. Although the beach is famous for spending time with the turtles, Turtle Beach also boasts diving, snorkelling, and surfing activities. This location is perfect for closely witnessing marine life. Visitors can also spot turtles offshore when they come out to lay eggs.
