I booked us on a tour off bangalore, with pick-up and drop off at the airport. I then called ands asked to be picked up at our hotel, which was within 15 minutes of the airport, is closer to the city, (Read More) and did not have and road tolls (which would have been the case for airport pickup). We were picked up and then met our english-speaking, Peter, at our first stop. He then provided a wonderfully detailed and lively experience. He is truly one of the best guides I have met, and having been a guide myself, I feel I'm in a good position to make this determination.
Part way through the day, the tour operator called our guide, who related to us that if we wanted to be dropped off at the airport, as per our contract, we would have to pay an additional 4,000 INR. Otherwise, we would be dropped off in the downtown. I explained that I our contract said drop off would be at the same place as the pickup, and that it was unfair to ask us now for extra money. It was clearly an attempt to extort money from us, based on the fact that we were now vulnerable, with our luggage in the vehicle, and the need to get to the airport for our flight, so i explained that it was not as per our contract, phone discussion, or fair seeing as the pickup distance was less than the contract. As well, it should have only costs 1,600 INR at most to get us from our location to the airport. The guide clearly felt the same. The tour operator insisted that I pay the extra money. Because I refused to pay, he had the driver drop us and our 2 kids off in a random location in Bangalore, which felt quite unsafe as we had all our luggage with us, and would have had to wait on the sidewalk for another drive. The guide finally was able do convince the driver to take us to the airport and paid out of his own pocket as he was incredibly gracious and I think ashamed for the extortionate behavior of the operator.
It was an unecessarily stressful end to our trip, and without the kindness of the guide Peter, it could have been very unsafe for us. As a white person traveling with 2 young kids in India, this still left me with a very bad impression, as I was subjected to regular events similar to this throughout the entire trip.
