- Six hours instead of nine. That is the deliberate call behind the first overnight of the Arunachal family tour package landing at Bhalukpong rather than Bomdila. Our representative meets the family at Guwahati airport or railway and the drive heads to the Arunachal border beside the Kameng river, low and warm and easy for anyone who has just got off a long flight. Inner Line Permit check at Bhalukpong and then the hotel. Children sleep well here before the climbing begins tomorrow.
- The proper climb begins, about 140 kilometres and six hours through the Tenga valley to Bomdila at 8,000 feet, where the monastery and the viewpoint are worth a stop. From Bomdila it drops gently into Dirang, small and orcharded at around 4,900 feet with a hot water spring running below the old dzong. The afternoon goes to Sangti Valley, flat and open and full of grazing horses fifteen kilometres from town. Children seem to enjoy that stretch as much as anything on the entire trip.
- The big drive. Sela Pass sits at 13,700 feet and the family gets there roughly seven hours after leaving Dirang, with a cold lake just below the pass top and the Jaswant Garh War Memorial and Nuranang Falls on the descent.
