West Virginia, USA

A state filled with nature, greenery and scenic spots filled with history, West Virginia is the perfect place to visit. Whether one is visiting for a peaceful getaway or a historically educational trip with the exquisite landscape, its a wonderful place to visit.

A place that encapsulates West Virginia's history, as well as beautiful terrain, is the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park which has museums, historical exhibits, and programs, plus about 20 miles of hiking trails. It is adjacent to St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and the old cemetery on the hill behind it- which can be hiked to.

Another location where history can be witnessed is The Greenbrier which has achieved the National Historic Landmark several times over. It has hosted 26 presidents, foreign dignitaries, and royalty. Early in World War II, it was used as a detention centre for German and Japanese diplomats who were in the United States when war was declared. The natural sites of West Virginia include the Seneca Caverns whose formation began 460 million years ago when the cavern's limestone bed first formed.

The New River is also an important landmark and is actually one of the oldest rivers on the continent. West Virginia is also privy to the Blackwater Falls State Park, which is named after its near-black coloured water. Blackwater Falls drops 60 feet. There are various steps and viewing areas that make the falls open to the public year-round. For a change of scenery, Snowshoe is the best place to visit!

The year-round resort gives visitors the opportunity to ski, with three separate areas to choose from, all with 100 per cent snowmaking, and one with an 800-foot vertical drop. If skiing is unavailable due to weather conditions, there are plenty of activities that one can enjoy which include mountain biking, scenic chairlift rides, geocaching, horseback riding, Segway tours, ziplining, trampolining, and many more. West Virginia is not limited to the conventional destinations, with many historical asylums with suspected paranormal activity, astronomical observatories and culture centres, it offers a multitude of different experiences.
