Phawngpui National Park, Mizoram Overview

About Phawngpui National Park

Phawngpui National Park also called Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park was established in 1992, about 300 km from the closest city Aizawl, in the Saiha district towards the southeast of Mizoram. It is one of the two national parks of Mizoram. The area of the park is 50 km² making it big enough for trekking and other such adventurous activities.

The unique name of the park comes from the highest mountain peak in the state - The Phawngpui Peak at the height of 2157 m. 'Phawngpui' translates to 'grassland' in English; also the mountain is covered with a thin layer of clouds and appear blue from a distance; thus it's the appropriate name.

Location of the National Park

The Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park is located in the district of Saiha towards the southeast of Mizoram. It overlooks the Chhimtuipui river and the hill ranges of Myanmar. The Kolodyne river is also in its vicinity, towards the east. The highest point in Mizoram which is the Phawngpui Peak (2157 m) is located inside the park.

The park is located at an elevation of about 7000 feet making the climate enjoyable all year round. The mountain ranges and rivers further accentuate the pleasantness of the park. The average rainfall is 3000 mm. The recommended time for visitation is between November and April.

Flora and Fauna of Phawngpui National Park

The park has a variety of different species of flora and fauna, mainly covered in subtropical broadleaf and tropical evergreen forests. The Phawngpui mountain peak and the reservatory forest around it make the premise of the park. It is adorned with grasses, orchids, oak trees, rhododendron trees, fairly rare bamboo groves, therapeutic basil, blossoms, the daphnia flower, etc. The species of fauna found here are in significant numbers. There are several types of birds, land animals and reptiles present.

Some animals include leopard, tiger, mountain goat, Asiatic black bear, barking deer, goral, serow, slow loris, common langur, etc. Some birds include a falcon, sunbirds, mountain bamboo partridge, Blyth's tragopan, Oriental honey buzzard, woodpeckers, common flame back, large-billed crow, purple cocoa, etc. Some species of eagle such as the black eagle, mountain hawk eagle, sparrow hawk, tawny eagle, more magnificent spotted eagle, short-toed snake eagle, etc. Several species of reptiles, amphibians, fishes are also spotted.

How To Get There

Tourists may reach the park via air, rail or road. The nearest airport is Aizawl Airport which is about 300 km from the Phawngpui Blue Mountain Park; the streets are well connected to the national park. The nearest rail station is Silchar Railway Station which is about 185 km away from the park. The Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park is well connected to the nearby major cities such as Hyderabad (193 km), Chennai (530 km), and Nagpur (560 km). There are plenty of public and private transportation services that accommodate this road trip at frequent intervals. Visitors may avail accommodation in the rest houses in Saiha city which is in close vicinity of the park.

Given the park's ample space and availability of varied species of flora and fauna, it makes for a great trekking experience. Trekkers may even camp here and spend a greater time exploring the park. Other places to visit are the mountain peak of Phawngpui and the Vantawng waterfall which are in its vicinity and are breathtaking sights. These are popular tourist destinations given its natural beauty.
