Stone Gate, Zagreb Overview

This Stone Gate of Zagreb is the last of the entrances to the city’s old fortifications. It is perhaps the most important shrine of Zagreb and is the east entrance gate to the medieval town. It is regularly frequented by locals and visitors alike who pray, light a candle, sing and thank the holy lady.

It was built in the 1200s as a part of the four main gates that open up to the town. The shrine of our Lady of the Stone Gate houses the mother of god’s painting who survived the 17th-century fire and is currently protected by a forged iron fence with artistic impressions adorning it. There are engravings on all the stone slabs within the gate’s passage and representing the thanking of the locals to the Lady Virgin. Most have ‘Hvala Ti’ engraved onto them which means ‘Thank you’.
