Venetian Ghetto, Venice Overview

The Venetian Ghetto is an ancient Jewish Ghetto situated in the Canareggio district of Venice. It has a significant place in Venetian and Jewish history. The Jewish Museum, two inns, five synagogues, some shops, a yeshiva and a kosher restaurant occupy the Venetian Ghetto. It also has a cemetery.

Guided tours of the Ghetto are available at the Museo Ebraico. Three synagogues have been converted into public museums, while two are kept for religious activities. The synagogues were constructed above residential buildings, so you might want to avoid a tour if you have difficulty climbing stairs.

History of the Venetian Ghetto

This Ghetto is one of the oldest Jewish ghettos in Europe, set up in 1516. This space was used to isolate the Jews by the Venetian Republic to appease the Roman Catholic Church, which wanted to ostracise the Jewish community. In 1787, the Jews were freed under Napolean’s rule, which lasted only six months when Venice fell under the Austrian administration. They were finally emancipated in 1866 when Venice joined Italy.
