Tsukiji Market, Tokyo Overview
The wholesale market and its tuna auction moved to Toyosu in 2018. What is left at Tsukiji is the outer market, a grid of narrow lanes selling sushi breakfasts, tamagoyaki, knives and kitchen tools, and for most travellers it is the better visit of the two. Go between Tuesday and Saturday, early: it shuts Sundays and holidays and most stalls close by early afternoon.
The Tsukiji outer market remains one of Tokyo's best spots for fresh seafood, street food and kitchenware, and tourists are encouraged to explore this outer section, where they are less likely to interfere with business. The inner wholesale market and its famous tuna auction relocated to Toyosu Market in October 2018, so visitors hoping to see the auction should head there instead. A few rules still apply when browsing the outer market: avoid touching produce, and skip bringing small children or wearing heels. Many visitors round off the trip with freshly made sushi or sashimi at one of the outer market's stalls.
