Meenvallam Waterfalls , Palakkad Overview

A magnificent 5 step waterfall in Kerala, Meenvallam Waterfall is one of the top 10 places to be in Palakkad. People often visit this place for a couple of hours, taking in the gushing water that falls from over 100-125 feet. Also known as Meenvallom, this waterfall is a great attraction especially during the winter and is definitely a sight not to be missed. 

Meenvallam waterfall is the final one out of the 10 between Palakkad and Mannarkkad. The waterfall passes through Kalladikode Hills and disperses into different falls near River Thuppanad.  The best time to visit this attraction is after monsoons, in October when the weather is more manageable. What’s interesting about these waterfalls is that they are often kept a secret. Situated in dense and unknown forests, they are mostly out of reach. Nevertheless, Meenvallam Waterfall has become one of the major attractions in Palakkad and should be on your list.

Entry Details

A fee of INR 20 needs to be paid as an entry fee in order to see the waterfalls. However, those who wish to take a tour around Meenvallam may have to pay extra for tours which would vary according to the nature of the tour. Visitors are allowed to enter the waterfall anytime from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Route

There are a total of 7 waterfalls in Meenvallam. The final one is called Meenvallam Waterfall which consists of 10 steps. Each step is around 20-25 feet high but only 8 steps of this waterfall can be seen and 2 can be accessed. This area is mostly covered by rubber plantations, making the terrain extremely slippery. The waterfall originates from Siruvani Dam in Coimbatore along with Kanjhirampuzha and Attilla waterfalls. The waterfalls cascade from over 45 meters into Thappanadu River, which then flows into Bharathapuzha River, near NH 213, where Meenvallam Waterfalls are located. It is surrounded by the extension of Silent Valley National Park. despite the terrain, this place is a beautiful picnic spot.

Tips

  • If one is planning on visiting the waterfalls from June to September, it is safest to check with the district tourism office in order to ensure that the waterfalls are open. This is because the slippery terrain the local protests have led the authorities to close the area during peak monsoon. 
  • It is best to arrive in the morning because the entry gates close at around 4:00 PM.

How To Reach Meenvallam Waterfalls

Meenvallam waterfalls are located in Meenvallam which is around 30 kilometres away from Palakkad and around 77 kilometres from Coimbatore. It is also 6 kilometres away from Kalladicode. The nearest bus stand to Meenvallam waterfalls is the Kalladicode bus stand but visitors might need to take a taxi or a cab from this bus stand till the waterfall. For those who are driving to this place, the waterfalls are situated right off Kalladikode, on Palakkad Kozhikode Highway (NH 213). One can also reach Meenvallam waterfalls by taking a 2-kilometre trek from the car park at Koomankundu shops.
